Internationally renowned snowboarder Robbie Walker hit the slopes at Mt Buller today with some new riding buddies launching his Kids Can Ride program. While resting with an injury earlier this year Walker had the idea to start a program to share his passion for snowboarding with other kids, and Kids Can Ride was born.
“When I was a kid I loved to hang out with the older snowboarders and learn fro them; now I am lucky enough to snowboard around the world for a living. This is a chance for me to make a difference, give something back and pass on some skills to the next generation of riders, “ explains Robbie.
Teenagers Sam Lehman, Mitch Greenway, Jamie Carns and Sam Corboy were the fortunate kids to be selected for two days of individual coaching and skills development with the world-class snowboarder at Mt Buller. With only minimal snowboarding experience between them the boys were excited at learning from one of the best, “I’d never even seen snow before but I am already getting the hang of it” said Sam Corboy visiting from Rye on the surf coast.
Through the new Kids Can Ride program the boys are spending two full days at Mt Buller, with support from Buller Ski Lifts, Billabong and Black Mountain rental among other local businesses.
“Snowboarding is a great sport and I am confident in the coming days these boys will learn to love it as much as I do” said Walker. “They are having a blast and I cannot believe how quickly they are improving. They are already making a few jumps and their confidence is amazing.”
Robbie Walker lives in Melbourne, travels and competes around Australia and internationally in snowboarding events and regularly rides at Mt Buller.
