The inaugural Boxes For Days Down Under event kicked off the other week in NZ and just last week hit Selwyn Snowfields up in New South. Designed to “put the fun back into contests” there was no doubting the smiles throughout the day. Can’t wait to head to Baw Baw for the final comp on August 20th..
Big up to Dane Tiene taking out the win with Tom Pelley close behind.. Here is how the day went down:
BOXES 2011 SERVES UP THE FUN
About 50 shredders and up and coming grommies rode alongside premium Australian riders including Quiksilver’s Tom Pelley and Roxy’s Jess Rich at the BOXES 2011 event at Selwyn Snowfields in NSW last Saturday, July 3 – the second of three BOXES events in the Australasian series.
A super fun day in the sun saw competitors challenged to ride an entire box line, then transfer on to a wall ride, to bin bonk, to platform, with Mervin Rep Marcus Stocker saying this end section proved to be the hardest to complete.
“Our BOXES event’s are all about putting the fun back into snowboarding competitions, so we had to create a course hard enough to challenge the Pro’s but also fun enough to give everyone entering a real chance,” he says.
The youngest competitor Declan Gear (13) almost smoked the major prize of a full set-up from Mervin Manufacturing including board, bindings and outerwear in the opening half hour, but then Dane Tiene aced the entire course around midday to stake the title, with Tom Pelley pulling an impressive nose press / board slide right the way down to finish close behind him.
Wiki Jones put on a stellar performance to finish best female, edging out Jess Rich and Amber Arazny.
DJ RJ kept the vibe pumping all day and a jam session over two rails and a wall ride once the competing had concluded just added to the fun for competitors and spectators.
The third and final BOXES event of the season will take place at Mt Baw Baw in VIC on August 20.
