He has just updated another long range forecast and the predicition shows some positive signs in the week leading up to opening weekend. Looks like we’re in for a strong start to the season.

Here is ‘The Frogs’ forecast:

With a high pressure system sitting over the SE of the country we should see mainly fine and sunny days through til Sunday. Nights should be cold enough for snowmaking during this time.

There is a weak cold front due on Sunday 22nd that could bring some showers at first followed by light snowfalls on the higher areas above around 1500-1700m on the 23rd-24th. At this stage it looks like around 5-10cm but that could possibly increase if we can see some colder air added to the mix from the S-SW on the 24th. Will have to wait another day for confirmation.

High pressure stystems will take over after this and bring mostly stable weather through to around the 31st before we see some light showers activity 31st-1st. Following that what looks to be a much stronger and colder system should arrive around 3rd of June and we could see some good snowfalls around the 4th-7th.

Season 2011 is fast approaching! And what better to get us excited than the first early season forecast from seasoned snow forecasting extraordinaire Pete ‘The Frog’ Taylor. For those not familiar with Pete’s history, they guy can predict snowfall. Certainly one of the most reliable out there.

Pete has just dropped his early season forecast on his site Snowatch.com.au. There are both positives and negatives but one thing to assure you all is Pete is seeing a La Nina pattern which has often delivered great seasons. Pete thinks the season will start slow but believes will kick and kick decent saying “I’d be surprised if the Victorian resorts didn’t finally crack the2m mark and NSW could even be up around 2.5m by the end of August.” Lets hope your right Pete!

We’re in for some mixed conditions with the onset of spring in our alpine resorts. Last weekend brought damaging rain and wind causing chaos on the mountains. Although rain did take some cover, conditions overnight were cold enough for some fresh snow to fall ensure the cover from our August dumps keeps us going well into September.

Looking ahead again we see some mixed conditions with a cold front passing over both the Alpine and Snowy mountain region. Here is what seasoned forecaster Pete Taylor of Snowatch has to say about the coming weeks:

We should see mainly fine weather until showers develop on Thursday and Friday. Temps will be mostly too warm for snow but there will be a short period where the temp will drop on Friday and snow should fall above 1600m.

A cool change on the 13th should bring light snowfalls above around 1300-1400m that should continue into the 14th and maybe 15th. At this stage it looks like around 10cm from this.

Looking further ahead the next possible snowfall looks to be around the 19th with a weak change bringing light snowshowers. Following this could be a stronger system that should arrive around the 22nd-24th. Fingers crossed this one brings a nice late season top up.

Also keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology for up to date conditions and forecasts:

Wow, where to begin! How about with this statement: Officially the snowiest August in 18 years! The biggest dump of 2010 hit lastnight with amazing snow falling across all resorts and even now I’m being told the snow is falling in Jindy!

Falls Creek have come out the biggest winners with a ridiculous 54cm overnight, taking this storms total to over 70cm! They may have been screwed by the weather with Stylewars but they have been given an absolute gift here!

Falls Creek just before midnight on August 25

Nearby neighbour Hotham also polled well with 47cm! This is officially the snowiest August since 1992 with 202cm of snow falling to date in this month alone. But unfortunately the roads from Harrietville at the moment.

Buried cars at Hotham this morning.

Here is a wrap up of how all the resorts fared over the last 24 hours:

Hotham – 47cm
Falls – 54cm
Buller – 29cm
Baw Baw – 10cm
Perisher – 33cm
Thredbo – 40cm
Charlotte Pass – 25cm

And if that wasnt enough, seasoned snow forecaster Pete Taylor of Snowatch has predicted that another 7-15cm will be falling across the resort for the next two days!

Get out there and get your pow on, happy shredding everyone!!

August, which has been dubbed ‘Awesome August’ by many snow goers, is continuing to provide fantastic fresh falls which we haven’t seen for a number of years. All of the main ski resorts across Victoria and New South Wales are recording major snow falls which is now proving critical to the success of the 2010 season. It seems ‘Awesome August’ should also be known as ‘August The Deliverer’ following the spiteful falls throughout June/July.

The weather doesn’t appear to be letting up either with lower pressure systems set to periodically sweep through over the coming weeks. A band of cloud currently hitting the slopes is providing some decent snow falls for all resorts, which will continue until at least Friday. The sub zero temperatures are also keeping the snow guns working over time on many main trails to complement the natural snow falls, allowing almost all lifts across the resorts to be running.

The latest snow falls and depths are:

Australia’s most respected snow weather forecaster Pete ‘The Frog’ Taylor from snowatch.com.au has predicted another 20-30cm of fresh snow will fall across the resorts over the next 2-3 days before the sun breaks through on Sunday.

The lunacy of weather has continued in all sense of the word this week with Mt Hotham recording 35cm in the last 7 days and overnight reporting the mountain has seen its best August falls since 2004.

‘A mixed bag of weather this week with the day of the season to date last Tuesday, fresh snow, sunshine, more snow, dry snow, wet snow, windhold, rain and more! It is now snowing again and in the last 24 hours, 10cm of fresh flakes has fallen.

We’re in the middle of this next storm and have received 16cm of snow in the last 48 hours and 35cm in the last 7 days. More is expected by the end of the weekend. Currently the snowfall for August is at 119cm – the best August snowfalls since 2004.’ MtHotham.com.au

This is a huge feat for Hotham, but also all other resorts recording substantial falls in August also. Considering July didn’t live up to expectation, its excitement to finally see the 2010 season take off.

After the amazing season saving dumps we experienced last week, the Alpine and Snowy Mountain regions are expecting another snow bearing cold front to pass through over the coming days.

Seasoned snow forecaster Pete Taylor of Snowatch has predicted approx 10cm to fall each day over the coming 3 days. Here is his outlook:

The clouds should start to roll in across the mountains today with showers on the lower slopes and snow up high. It’s hard to pick the exact snow level with this system and it may go up and down during the day. As I tpe it’s currently snowing here at Smiggins at 1600m. Tomorrow most of the moisture looks like sitting just to the west of the resorts and as such Wednesday now only looks like bringing light snow.

A weak front should arrive on the 15th that should bring light snowshowers only across the 15th-17th.

There is another system due around the 20th but at this stage it’s difficult to tell if it will bring snow or showers. There is potential for this to build into something big if the highs in front and behind weaken slightly as the system moves across the mainland. It’s one to keep an eye on.

After that the 25th-26th looks promising for more snowfalls.

The Bureau of Meteorology is also predicting the white stuff to hit over the coming days, check below for their region specific forecast:

Victorian Alpine Forecast

Happy shredding folks!
